[ Comments ]

"French style overture" was vogue in baroque music period and often used as the opening of opera, oratorio and suite. Its original form consists of two parts, which are "slow" part and "fast" part."Slow" part often indicated with "Grave" are featured with dotted notes and solemn atmosphere. On the other hand, "fast" part often indicated with "Allegro" or "Vivace" has fugue-like form. In some pieces, after "fast" part is ended, "slow" part is put again. J.S.Bach's four Orchestral Suites have this form. On the other hand, "Symphony" which is the beginning of in G.F.Handel's "Messiah", and the 16-the variation of "Gordberg Variations" by J.S.Bach have original two-part form.

[ Structure ]

This piece has three-parts form, i.e, "Slow-Fast-Slow".

The first part is "slow" part. It is slightly modified melody of the Scottish song with the rhythm of dotted notes and additional 3 bars. This part is repeated. The second part is "fast" part. It is fugue with new melody. The Scottish song is used also in "fast" part, i.e., it is suggested in bars 71, 74 and 81. And after bar 101, the Scottish song is combined with new theme of fugue and these two themes form double-fugue. In "fast" part, "tutti" and "trio" appear alternately like "Concerto Grosso". The last part is "slow" part again and it is the latter half part of the Scottish song.

[ Instrumentation ]

As "Concerto Grosso" in baroque music, instrumentation is "concertino" in trio and "tutti" in string orchestra.
