Over the years, I have periodically Googled for info on a Language:Japan alumni list or even to see what it is currently up to. I just now found this link (scroll down to the bottom) that states Language:Japan ended in 1995, and the entire Exchange:Japan program appears to have now been taken over by another group.

http://www.uwf.edu/japan/pgrmsameric.htm

Only once since I was on Language:Japan have I ever met anyone else who did the program; I was on a plane flying from Narita to LAX in 1994, and amazingly, someone who'd been on the program with me was on that flight.

If either of you were Language:Japan participants and you know of any mailing list or anything for former members, please let me know where to find it. If you don't, maybe I should start one in Yahoo groups or something?

Cheers,

Jonathan

Hi Rafy and Lianne,

Rafy, did you go to Gujo-Hachiman on the Exchange:Japan program? I was in Hachiman for Exchange:Japan '92.

How about you, Lianne? I'd heard they tend to recruit their AETs from among people who've done E:J where possible.

I've been to Gujo-Hachiman many times (and have met Motoshi and his uncle) and received my Gujo-Odori certificate at Gujo-Odori in Aoyama. I found out about Aoyama completely by accident when I used to work near Baisouin and one day while sitting outside that the Starbucks during lunch, I thought I heard Gujo-Odori music. I tracked it down to a speaker on a bookstore across the intersection and found there a poster for Gujo-Odori in Aoyama. I couldn't believe my eyes, and attended it both days :-)

I remember when they were holding it a nearby construction company while Baisouin was doing some remodeling, and am glad to hear Odori in Aoyama is back at Baisouin now.

I no longer live in Japan, but I treasure the eight years I spent there and my dream would be to retire to Gujo-Hachiman :-)

Best,

Jonathan

Konnichiwa! I need to get it touch with someone in the Hachiman or Minami-Mura Kyouikuiinkai. I worked as an AET (Assistant English Teacher)for one year, 1992-93, in Hachiman and Minami. For my current job, I need to show proof of that employment to get a raise in salary. Can anyone please help me get in touch with someone who can help me by filling out the form? The form is in English, and in PDF format. I can send a basic translation, if no one is available to fill it out in English. The form has to be filled out by an employer, I'm not allowed to do it myself. Thank you very much for your help! Doumo Arigatou Gozaimasu! Douzo yoroshiku onegai itashimasu!

See the following page.

http://www.basso-continuo.com/Gujo/Aoyama_e.htm

The OHAYASHI(Dance music) members come from Gujo-hachiman.
So the music is completely same as Gujo-hachiman.
Thought it is in Aoyama, Tokyo, it is an "all-out" Gujo-odori festival.

Hello everybody

Hello, my name is Rafy.
I am from the island of Puerto Rico
and I'm probably the only Puertorican
that has lived in Gujo Hachiman.
I lived there for 2 months back in 1995.
I'll be going to Japan again on
September 18 for 2 weeks. I want to go
there again if I can. I learned Gujo-Odori
and playing the odori songs in shamisen.

Nikita Uryupov San! Thank you for your writing.

Nikita-San, I am pleased to your writing,
especially mixing Japanese!(^-^)

When I went to Odori last August 16, there are many non-Japanese people.
I am happy to see them enjoying Gujo-Odori
and I hope more people will know and enjoy this Odori.
Off course, I hope Nikita-San will participate yourself again
and someday I will meet you in the place of Gujo-Odori.

Notes:
(1) To write Japanese in this BBS, it is not good to type Japanese
character directly, but to type with UTF-8 code (UNICODE) expression.
For example,
"あいうえお"→"あいうえお".
I've changed Japanese character into the above format in your message.
(2) "こんいちわ" should be changed to "こんにちは".
I've NOT changed it in your message.(^^;)☆\(--;)

Thank you.

こんいちわ!

I have not know such superstitions.
However my mother told me just now, i.e.,
"ASAGUMO WO KOROSUTO JIGOKU NI OCHIRU", it means,
"The people who kills spiders in the morning will go to hell".
She does not know the origin of this superstition. (Off course I don't know it.)

Could someone please brush me up on the rules and beliefs of killing spiders in Japan? I remember a long time ago sometime telling me not to kill spiders during a specific time of day (morning/night). I can't remember what time and why. (Please note that I have no ill intentions towards spiders, simply want to get my memory straight). Spiderman.

It means that, at least, there is a machine infected

It may be your machine!
